Description of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Drinking Water Pipe and Fitting

HDPE pipe, also known as high density polyethylene or polyethylene pipe, is made of HDPE granular material and is a flexible plastic pipe used for fluid and gas transportation.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are the ideal pipe material choice for applications like drinking water, wastewater, mining, industrial systems, power, communications, irrigation, fire protection, marine aquaculture, dredging works, oil and gas distribution.

HDPE pipe has features of abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, toughness, leak-free welded joints, etc. It can transport and distribute water and gas. The long life and low maintenance cost of HDPE pipe, combined with its ability to use a variety of trenchless installation techniques, gives HDPE pipe the lowest life cycle cost.

Jointing methods that fit HDPE pipe: Butt fusion welding, Socket fusion welding, Flange connection, Electrofusion welding, Saddle welding, Quick fittings connection

1, HDPE pipe butt fusion connection: Butt fusion is to use a butt fusion machine to heat the end of the pipe. After the end of the pipe is melted, it is quickly attached, maintaining a certain pressure, and then cooling to achieve the purpose of welding. HDPE pipes with a size larger than 90mm can be connected by the butt fusion process. This method is economical and reliable, and the tension and pressure of the joint have higher strength than the pipe itself.

2, HDPE pipe socket fusion connection: It heats the outer surface of the HDPE pipe and the inner surface of the HDPE pipe fittings through a hot-melt socket fusion machine, and then quickly attaches them after the surface is melted. OD20mm to OD110mm HDPE pipe and HDPE pipe fittings use this socket fusion connection.

3, HDPE pipe electrofusion connection: Electrofusion connection is to insert the two pipe ends to be connected into the sleeve with the electric heating wire embedded, pass the electric current through the electric heating wire, heat the pipe fittings to the melting temperature and fix it to the interface for cooling, then forming a tight and firm joint. It includes electrofusion socket connections and electrofusion saddle connections. The guarantee of the stable quality of the electrofusion connection mainly depends on strict compliance with the prescribed operating procedures and the quality of the electrofusion pipe fittings.

4. HDPE pipes mechanical connection: A pipe fitting that mechanically connects polyethylene (PE) pipe to another section of polyethylene (PE) pipe or pipe accessories. It can be assembled at the construction site or pre-installed at the factory. The methods are threaded connection, PP quick connector connection, welding or flange (including PE flange) and metal parts to connect and assemble.

Advantages of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipe and Fitting for water and gas:

  • 1. No leakage with a reliable connection: The polyethylene pipe system is connected butt fusion or electrofusion, and the strength of the joint is higher than that of the pipe body. The HDPE pipe and other pipes are connected by flange, which is convenient and quick.
  • 2. Excellent low temperature impact resistance: The embrittlement temperature of polyethylene is extremely low, and it can be used safely in the temperature range of -40℃ to +60℃. The pipe will not be brittle in winter due to the good impact resistance of the pipe.
  • 3. Excellent stress cracking resistance: HDPE has low notch sensitivity, high shear strength, excellent scratch resistance and outstanding environmental stress cracking performance.
  • 4. Excellent chemical resistance: Polyethylene is an inert material. HDPE pipes are resistant to erosion by various chemical media except for a few strong oxidants. Chemical substances present in the soil will not cause any degradation to the pipe.
  • 5. Anti-aging and long service life: Polyethylene pipes containing 2-2.5% evenly distributed carbon black can be stored or used outdoors for 50 years without being damaged by ultraviolet radiation, and more than 50 years under the condition of ≤60℃.
  • 6. Good wear resistance: The comparison test of wear resistance between HDPE pipe and steel pipe shows that the wear resistance of HDPE pipes is 4 times that of steel pipes. In the field of mud transportation, HDPE pipes have better wear resistance than steel pipes, which means that HDPE pipes have longer service life and lower cost
  • 7. High toughness and good weldability: HDPE pipe is a kind of high-toughness pipe, its elongation at break generally exceeds 500%. The adaptability to the uneven settlement of the pipe foundation is very strong with excellent seismic performance. The flexibility of HDPE pipe makes it easy to bend and bypass obstacles by changing the direction of the pipe. The flexibility of the pipe can reduce the number of pipe fittings to save installation costs.
  • 8. Small resistance to water flow: HDPE pipes has a smooth inner surface with a Manning coefficient of 0.009. The smooth surface and non-stick properties ensure that HDPE pipes have a higher conveying capacity than conventional pipes. And the pressure loss of the pipeline and the energy consumption of water delivery is also reduced.
  • 9. Easy to transport: HDPE pipe are lighter than concrete pipe, galvanized pipes, and steel pipe, it is easy to handle and install. Lower manpower and equipment requirements mean the lower installation cost of the project.
  • 10. Excellent variety of construction methods: In addition to traditional excavation methods, various new trenchless techniques such as pipe jacking, directional drilling, lining pipes, and cracked pipes can be used for HDPE pipe construction. It's the only option for some places where excavation is not allowed. So HDPE pipes are more widely used.
